Five years ago, we’d been together and on fire, but the flames burned us both. Now she’s back in my life and is all my wildest fantasies in the flesh.

I want her. The desire is too powerful to argue against, but I’m not interested in what we had. This is an arrangement about pleasure and finding out who we are behind closed doors. There won’t be talk of love or any sweet nothings whispered by either of us.

This time, I’ll control the heat between us and make sure neither of our hearts get too close to the flames.

Basically, the two main characters are Kyle and Ruby. They got together in law school, Kyle in his last year, Ruby a year behind. They choose to break up when Kyle graduates because neither believes in long distance relationships, but when the time to say goodbye looms near, misunderstandings run rampant and both are left with hurt feelings and leftover bitterness. Fast forward five years, and herein starts this tale of erotica.

There was a second chance romance story at the heart of this book. Although I found the reasons behind their initial split to be stupid, juvenile and absurd, they were also strangely realistic. Ruby and Kyle acted as any other early adults would in the same situation IMO. Many people tend to jump the gun and make assumptions without any facts. It happens. However, it's not what one would expect from law school students. In law school, it's stressed that we must endeavor to think logically and analytically, among many other things. We're encouraged to think outside of the box in order to enhance our critical thinking. Did these characters miss those particular lessons?

In the bedroom, Kyle and Ruby were passion personified. Outside of that... take that same passion and add miscommunication and these two were absolutely volatile. All the love in the world didn't stop them from repeating the same mistakes. Ruby still jumped to conclusions and Kyle had a tendency to shut down.

Quick note: there was a pretty long menage scene (actually the longest sex scene, I think), but to be honest, of all of the sex scenes, this was my least favorite (in terms of sensuality or overall sexiness). It was the one I was the least into. It didn't get me hot and bothered. I was tempted to skim it until I realized the important role it played in the story. It taught about the intimacy that can be found in a D/s relationship and how the Dom can take his cues from his sub. So at first I felt pretty "meh" about it, but in the end I felt I learned something valuable. Regardless, the other scenes in the book more than made up for the more technical menage scene. They were muy caliente!

In conclusion, this was my first foray into the delectably erotic imagination of Nikki Sloane, but with this book, I can see myself coming back for more.

About the Author:

Nikki Sloane landed in graphic design after her careers as a waitress, a screenwriter, and a ballroom dance instructor fell through. For eight years she worked for a design firm in that extremely tall, black, and tiered building in Chicago that went through an unfortunate name change during her time there. Now she lives in Kentucky and manages a team of graphic artists. She is a member of the Romance Writers of America, is married with two sons, writes dirty books, and couldn’t be any happier.
